Boxer Puppies
Boxer puppies are usually not the ones who need the assistance of a rescue organization, as they are viewed as a marketable "commodity" by the general public.
As part of our pet education services, Boxer Friends Inc. warns prospective Boxer puppy owners that the puppies you see advertised in the newspapers and in pet stores for $200 - $700 are NOT HEALTH TESTED, and in most cases, are also not well-bred!! Always ask to see health certificates and examine pedigrees. Being advertised solely as AKC certified means very little. Go to the bottom of this page for a link to learn about the exact health certificates and testing you should be looking for.
If you purchase one of these puppies, you are supporting these unprofessional and "back-yard" breeders and puppymills and YOU CONTRIBUTE to the decline and commercialization of the Boxer breed.
Pictured above are two purebred Boxers. We bet you can pick out the poorly bred one, solely by appearance! The first Boxer is a very good physical example of a Boxer dog, according to the official breed standard. Conscientious and REPUTABLE breeders produce not only Boxers who are stunning in appearance, but who are healthy and even-tempered. Although both his parents are Boxers, the second Boxer IS NOT a good physical example of this breed, and unfortunately, does not possess the characteristics that Boxers are known for, BECAUSE he is not well-bred, and was obviously produced by a "breeder" who is careless, inexperienced and "into breeding" for all the wrong reasons. I know this for sure, because he is one of my own Boxers.
What the general public does not realize, is that when you have poorly bred dogs, not only will your dog be a poor physical representation of your particular breed, but he/she may have temperament issues. Because the Boxer dog has been affected by commercialization and over-breeding (being ranked the 10th most popular dog), it is almost impossible to "guarantee" the inexpensive Boxer you are purchasing from a newspaper ad or a pet store possesses all the characteristics that the breed is known for.
If you want to see more of what happens when selfish and greedy people decide to make a quick buck by breeding any two dogs, visit ANY Boxer rescue website (especially in larger cities or states like Los Angeles Boxer Rescue in California, and our own state rescue groups - Boxer Friends and Florida Boxer Rescue) and just look at the dogs on the pages. You will be able to clearly see what is happening to this breed because of "supply and demand". Boxers are very popular dogs, and that means there is a high demand for them, so "breeders" crank out litters without regard to health or temperament, to meet that demand.
Well-bred Boxer puppies are expensive! Even if you are not interested in the "show circuit" and merely want one for a family pet, you should NEVER purchase a puppy from these unprofessional breeders or from a pet store! To do so, you are supporting the backyard breeders and puppymills and lining their pockets. The cycle will not end until people stop buying inexpensive and poorly bred puppies!
